Our Straw Bale Cucumber and Squash Beds

April 11, 2014

Last year we grew Cucumbers and Squash in two straw bale beds.  This is a great option for a raised bed in a temporary location.  Nasturtium seeds were also planted in both beds to help repel insects and to provide edible flower blossoms for our salads.

This video shows how the beds were planted.

This is the way our two beds looked about 2 months after planting.

  1. Very cool idea and way to do it, but did you not have to tie the bales to keep them all held together in place at all?

    • Hi DJ
The straw stayed in place. The individual straw sections are somewhat compressed. Then when you begin watering the straw does not blow around. This approach makes a good temporary bed for one season.

I have some old tires.. What do you think about using the tires

  3. Hi amit
Yes, tires could work for a temp bed. The Miracle-Gro Moisture Control Soil Mix helps to really make the difference.
