Is It Too Late to Kill Lawn Weeds?

October 17, 2012

Here’s the skinny for all you spouses who want your better half to wipe out lawn weeds this fall.  (If you are one of those spouses on the receiving end of this order and have already claimed “we will need to wait till spring to kill those lawn weeds”, you might want to hide this blog posting.)

As long as your daily temps are reaching a high of 45 degrees or more the day you spray, you can kill pesky perennial weeds like Dandelion, Clover and Ground Ivy (Creeping Charlie), as well as annual weeds like Chickweed and Henbit.  Kill them this fall and they will not be in your lawn next spring.

Fall is a great time to kill Ground Ivy, also known as Creeping Charlie

There are various Ortho Weed-B-Gon products depending on where you live.  Click here to see your options.

Note:  If you planted grass seed this fall, it is best to wait until the new seedlings have been mowed 4 times before you apply weed killers.

I live in florida and have a floratam lawn with grassy and broadleaf weeds. What do you suggest for fall weed and feed control?

    • Hi Barry
You can use Scotts Bonus S Weed & Feed. Water after application. Most folks think of this as an early spring product, however it can be used now.

I live in California and i have just re-seeded a quarter of my lawn that was just dead when we bought this house. I took out all the dead grass and added new soil before re-seeding. Now grass is growing but it is full of clovers that have taken over the new re-seeded area. Should i spray it with weed-be-gone or it is going to kill my new seed.

    • Hi Nancy
It is best to apply our Plus 2 weed & feeds to moist foliage with no rain or irrigation for 24 hours. Our Bonus S weed & feed should be watered after application.
