Brown Lawn? Could be Tiny Insects

July 18, 2016

Tiny insects that you can’t even see can attack your lawn during summer.  One indication that they may show up is when you see moths fly from your lawn when you mow or walk on your grass during early evening hours.  These moths do not damage your lawn, however they lay eggs for insects like sod webworms and cutworms that can cause your lawn to thin and turn brown.  Other insects, like chinch bugs can kill grass in sunny areas during this time of year.

Chinchbugs are attacking the lawn on the left while the lawn on the right is protected. If left untreated the lawn on the left will need to be replanted.

You can protect your lawn while feeding it with a special summer lawn food called Scotts Turf Builder with SummerGuard.  This product also takes care of other insects like fleas, ticks and ants.  If your lawn does not need feeding, you can spread Ortho Bug B Gon MAX on your lawn to take care of these insect problems.  Water your lawn after spreading to help activate the control and feeding.  It is OK for your pets and kids to play on the lawn after it has dried.

Oh by the way, it is ok if you still see some moths after treating, since they do no damage.  You have protected your lawn from the damage caused by their hatching eggs for about 6 weeks or so.

The weeds are winning! This is the second time this month I’ve pulled the weeds with stickers. Now I have holes in my lawn. I still have crabgrass and dandelions. No matter how much I water, the grass is brown ( as in the picture
above). What must I do? Obviously I have two problems.

    • Hi Denise
You should be able to kill your weeds with Ortho Weed B Gon MAX plus Crabgrass Killer. Be sure to check the label to see if it can be used on your grass type. Give your location and I can help you with that. Your location will also help me give you a feeding recommendation.

Ashton, I live in Vancouver, BC and overall grass looks fairly healthy, however some blades of grass in some areas are brown, especially near the top of the grass blade. Also a few mushrooms here and there but not many. My lawn gets a lot of sun so I need to irrigate often as the soil is very sandy and no clay at all. Just wondering if it needs a good feeding or lawn fungus control or both? I definitely am due for a feeding. What do you think? Thanks

    • Hi Jarad Barbour
A dull lawn mower blade can cause the grass blade tips to turn brown and look jagged. If the brown/yellow extends done the blade with brown spots or if the brown grass is in circular patches, this coul be a fungus. Since your grass needs feeding I would start there.
